HP Announces 3D Printing Partnership With Deloitte

Today, HP and Deloitte announced a partnership to “accelerate the digital transformation of the global manufacturing industry.” What does this mean, you ask? Well, let us tell you.

Deloitte’s Supply Chain and Manufacturing Operations practice helps companies apply digital business strategy to manufacturing initiatives. They plan to play a role in helping organizations incorporate 3D printing technology in their supply chain networks. They’ve formed an ecosystem of partners, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Dassault Systèmes, SAP, and Siemens, among others.

Even though HP only recently launched their first 3D printer, the company is quickly becoming a leader in the additive manufacturing space. Their award winning Jet Fusion 3D printing solutions and tools are rapidly gaining market acceptance.

Now the two companies are working together.

In the press release, Punit Renjen, the Global CEO at Deloitte was quoted as saying, “This alliance comprises two exceptional brands and brings together HP’s leading 3D printing platform with Deloitte’s digital manufacturing experience and global client reach.”

The two companies plan to collaborate on the implementation of HP’s 3D printing systems in large-scale manufacturing environments. Together, they’ll apply their leading digital operations experience to help enterprises design and produce more quickly, flatten their supply chains, and improve efficiency throughout the manufacturing lifecycle.

The goals are to increase innovation, accelerate time-to-market, reduce costs and waste, and help large enterprises compete more effectively in today’s dynamic global economy.

Dion Weisler, President and CEO, HP Inc. was also quoted, noting that, “companies investing in digital reinvention are poised to outpace their peers. Building on our disruptive 3D printing technology, together with Deloitte, we are focused on helping customers transform and win in this new era.”

In the past, 3D printing was primarily used for prototyping and small scale applications. Together they’ll work to broaden the scale and reach of 3D printing. They’ll be focused on production and scaling out networks of 3D printers, which will be connected across big enterprises.

But, this announcement should also be an eye opener for small and midsize firms. As bigger companies begin to migrate towards a digital workflow, they’ll likely disrupt the status quo. While smaller organizations might not have the resources to work with a firm like Deloitte, they’ll need to be thinking about their own opportunities with digitization.

There’s a lot involved in going digital. The transformation will likely have them rethinking everything from how products are designed, to where, when and how they’re manufactured. They’ll also have to consider the impacts on their sales and supply chains. Regardless of size, companies will need a strategy.
