Will the technology be a job creator or destroyer? The short answer is, it will take more jobs than it makes \u2014 and 3D printing is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techinsider.io\/obama-warns-congress-about-robot-job-takeover-2016-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not alone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Technology will eventually make work obsolete. Our big problems are going to be\u00a0figuring out how to survive the transition, then figuring out what to do with all\u00a0that free time.<\/p>\n<h2>The singularity<\/h2>\n<p>About\u00a010 years ago, inventor, futurist and now Director of Engineering at Google Ray Kurzweil famously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Singularity_Is_Near\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">embraced the concept<\/a>\u00a0of \u201cthe singularity\u201d \u2014 that moment in time when machine intelligence surpasses our own. Kurzweil predicted\u00a0the singularity would occur by 2045, and man and machine would become inseparable.<\/p>\n<p>Given the relationship most people have with their smartphones, you could argue it\u2019s already happening.<\/p>\n<p>For most people, the singularity conjures up one of two themes: Some envision a Terminator-like world, where the machines are in control; others have a more utopian vision, where robots do all the work while people enjoy other, more relaxing pursuits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both are distinct possibilities;\u00a0which scenario manifests itself depends on us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of the world\u2019s brightest people, including Bill Gates and Elon Musk, think artificial intelligence has the potential to be very harmful to humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Hawking definitely falls into the Terminator camp. In a recent letter he wrote,<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cit will only be a matter of time\u201d before AI technology reaches a point where it can deploy autonomous weapons capable of \u201cassassinations, destabilizing nations, subduing populations and selectively killing a particular ethnic group.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Privacy vs. transparency<\/h2>\n<p>Who doesn\u2019t want more transparency, right? Life would be a whole lot easier if governments, religions, businesses and others would just be honest. Imagine what we\u2019d learn if the doors to the U.S. Government\u2019s National Archives or the Vatican Library were thrown wide open. A lot more than we know today, that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n<p>But secrets exist for a reason. They\u2019re an advantage to the states, sects and other organizations that protect them. For individuals, they\u2019re even more valuable. They allow us to project an image that\u2019s different from who we truly are.<\/p>\n<p>The battle between privacy and transparency wages on. Encryption, net neutrality and other related issues are daily news. But if it\u2019s a war, we\u2019re like double agents \u2014 and which side we take\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/2016\/01\/14\/privacy-and-information-sharing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">depends<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the age of singularity, does any of that really matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Automation<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYou can kill it with labor, or you can kill it with technology.\u201d It\u2019s a phrase I\u2019ve uttered so many times in my career, I should print it on the back of my business card.<\/p>\n<p>What most people don\u2019t get, though, is that there is always a break-even point \u2014 and I mean a specific number \u2014 when it makes more sense to kill it with technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the abstract, everybody gets it. But when the pink slips start flowing, things get personal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thousands of jobs were lost as companies migrated from \u201ckilling it with labor\u201d to \u201ckilling it with technology.\u201d Those who resisted the transition perished. Those that remained were forced to become more productive.<\/p>\n<h2>Surviving the transition<\/h2>\n<p>Will man and machine battle it out, or will we reach the utopian vision of man unshackled from work? It comes down to how we handle the transition.<\/p>\n<p>The transparency that\u2019s inherent in technology will eventually destroy privacy. Automation will eventually eliminate the need for human labor. There\u2019s a short window of time between then and now.
