In it, engineers, analysts, and product support staff were asked if they would prototype more often if 3D printing were more accessible and easier to use.\u00a0<strong>85%<\/strong>\u00a0said YES. The respondents were also asked if they saw any additional applications for 3D printing (other than prototyping) within Northrop\u00a0Grumman.\u00a0<strong>48%<\/strong>\u00a0said YES.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we might debate where and how they should get access to 3D printing, but one thing seems clear. Access begets innovation. People who have access to 3D printing think about using it to solve big problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Innovation Begets Opportunity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the Volkswagen \u201cdiesel-gate\u201d crisis became public, all the industry analysts were saying the solution would be part software and part hardware \u2013 and that \u201cthe fix\u201d would most certainly impact fuel mileage and horsepower.<\/p>\n<p>The moment I read that, I thought, \u201c3D printing.\u201d Because I\u2019ve been lucky enough to have access to it, and various other digital manufacturing technologies, I guess I\u2019m wired to think that way, but here\u2019s why it popped into my head just then.<\/p>\n<p>VW would need to create a physical part to help their engines comply. That would require multiple iterations, quick production and a massive supply chain undertaking. Something north of 2 million cars are affected.<\/p>\n<p>Then today, I saw\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/11\/25\/9800146\/volkswagen-diesel-emissions-cheat-fix-video\">this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"fitvid0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jKN8danpIfE?feature=oembed&amp;amp;wmode=opaque\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Go ahead and try to tell me the \u201cflow transformer\u201d in that video wasn\u2019t 3D printed.<\/p>\n<p>Which got me wondering about the \u201chow\u201d and \u201cwhere.\u201d As in, how will these things be manufactured? And where?<\/p>\n<p>Certainly the plan is to mass manufacture them, ship them to dealerships all over the world, and install them as part of a recall. It\u2019s going to be expensive. It\u2019s a rush job on production, packaging and fulfillment.<\/p>\n<p>What happens if there\u2019s a design change? Scrap it all and start over?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s an Alternative Play<\/strong><b><a href=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/screen-shot.png\" data-featherlight=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-108151 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/screen-shot.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/screen-shot.png 846w, https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/screen-shot-300x118.png 300w\" alt=\"screen shot\" width=\"400\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>For an order of magnitude more money, Volkswagen could install 3D printers at each of its dealerships and print the parts on site.<\/p>\n<p>Now, first you\u2019re going to say, \u201c3D printing will still cost more.\u201d You\u2019re right.<\/p>\n<p>Then you\u2019ll say, \u201cVW is already in it waste deep, they can\u2019t afford to spend more.\u201d But here\u2019s why they can, and should.<\/p>\n<p>As much as Volkswagen has a massive product liability issue on their hands, they may have a bigger problem with brand perception and consumer trust.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine the PR opportunities. VW announces that it will use 3D printing to help it fix the problem. They\u2019ll be installing 3D printers at all of their dealerships to print the necessary part.<\/p>\n<p>Because \u201cthe fix\u201d is likely to evolve over time, new iterations will be made available as updates, printed, and installed as they become available. Maybe even throw in a bonus \u2013 customers will receive free fix-related parts for the life of their vehicle?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s likely \u201cthe fix\u201d will get progressively better. Could it even be customized by vehicle or tuned to specific local standards?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe VW takes it a step further. Because the company is committed to continuous improvement, it decides to open innovation on \u201cthe fix.\u201d Interested parties can download the hardware design and submit improvements.<\/p>\n<p>But, what about the upfront cost?<a href=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/flow-transformer.png\" data-featherlight=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-108396 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/flow-transformer-300x150.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/flow-transformer-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/flow-transformer.png 600w\" alt=\"flow transformer\" width=\"400\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The goodwill alone might cover the upfront investment. But, also think about the other opportunities, from accessories to vehicle customization and beyond. 3D printing could quickly become a profit center for VW and its dealerships.<\/p>\n<p>What about the time and resources needed to build that kind of network?<\/p>\n<p>What about the benefit of crowdsourcing innovation throughout your network of engineers and field technicians?<\/p>\n<p>What about the technology?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s available now (the part in the video was 3D printed!) and getting better all the time.<\/p>\n<p>What about implementation?<\/p>\n<p>It will take years to implement \u201cthe fix\u201d no matter how it\u2019s handled.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/vw-engine.png\" data-featherlight=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-108397 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/vw-engine.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/vw-engine.png 700w, https:\/\/3dprint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/vw-engine-300x122.png 300w\" alt=\"vw engine\" width=\"700\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tesla challenged a lot of assumptions recently when, via software download, it enabled semi-autonomous driving.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen has an opportunity to turn this crisis into opportunity by providing broader, faster access to innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Will it be expensive? Hell yes!<\/p>\n<p>But for VW, that\u2019s a reality in any scenario.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of better, faster innovation and a digital supply chain would be a huge advantage for Volkswagen. Their speed-to-market would be unmatched.
